Doggy Cuddles Just Got Even Better!
Rachel Crawford is co-founder of Harry Harlow, a premium canine fragrance and shampoo brand. We love Harlow Harry for its unique approach to dog products!
Tell us a bit about Harlow Harry - we haven’t encountered a brand quite like it before! Harlow Harry offers a range of sophisticated dog products, inspired by human fragrance and design, that have been safely developed for dogs. Our products are proudly made in Sydney, Australia and are free from alcohol, silicone, parabens, MCI/MI, formaldehydes, toxins and harmful ingredients. They are vet, groomer and most importantly, dog approved!
Where did you see a gap in the market? We identified a gap in the market for premium dog products, that look good and smell great. Many of the products we tried over the years left our dogs smelling like a wet dog in need of a wash and were less than aesthetically appealing.
And how did it all start? My business partner Grant is also my best friend. Our business journey began on a long weekend away with our families in the Hunter Valley. After a couple of wines, we joked about how fun it would be to be in business together, so we had an excuse to hang out even more than we did. It quickly snowballed from there, we brainstormed ideas and identified categories that we were passionate about and kept circling back to our love of dogs. By the end of the weekend, we walked away with the direction we wanted to head in and a loose game plan.
We hear how Rachel and Grant managed product creation for Harlow Harry, all whilst holding down full-time day jobs!
Creating such a safe, natural AND nice-smelling products can’t be easy. Where did you start? It was a long process – we both work full time in our respective fields, so Harlow Harry is the true definition of a side hustle. We had to find the right suppliers and manufacturers to partner with and had to communicate with them in either the evenings or early mornings.
With time and exploration, we were fortunate to find a 5th generation perfumer to work with on development of our base scents, and an amazing manufacturer with extensive experience and knowledge in our field who were excited by our vision.
Now this stage is complete, what’s next for Harlow Harry? Our short-term plan is to continue to drive awareness of the brand in overseas markets and grow our list of international stockists. Medium term, we are looking to expand our product range and longer term, we intend to become an all-encompassing lifestyle brand for dogs.
We love that you’ve held yourselves to high product quality standards - was that easy? Grant and I are really similar in a lot of ways - our partners would probably call us pedantic! We have strong attention to detail, and I believe this has helped us to produce high quality products that our customers love. In our early days, we deliberated over every single tiny decision, from packaging to scents and the final product - if we weren’t happy, we didn’t settle. I really believe that ethos has gotten the brand to where it is today.
We also notice you’ve put a big focus on social contribution, tell us a bit more about that? Giving back is really important to us and we decided in the early days that we wanted to contribute a portion of every sale to a deserving charity. Since our launch we have been working with Pound Paws, a local charity focused on re-homing animals in Australian pounds and rescue centres.
